About Sara Skipper, she/her, BRLS, DKATI, RP (Qualifying), RTC - Can see clients living in: British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, NWT, Nunavut
Listening with curiosity and compassion, Sara has a profound commitment to walking alongside individuals and groups to explore their inner and outer worlds. Sara integrates diverse therapeutic approaches, designed to meet each clients unique needs while honouring and welcoming her clients lived experiences.
Sara is a cisgender, queer woman with northern European ancestry. She is a professional art therapist, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), and Registered Therapeutic Counsellor who practices in Saskatchewan - Treaty 6 land of the Cree, Dakota, Nakota, Saulteaux and the homeland of the Metis Nation. This land acknowledgement affirms her commitment to move forward in partnership with Indigenous Nations in the spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.
Sara earned a Bachelors degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Brock University, a diploma in Recreation Services from Fleming College and completed her masters-level training in art therapy at the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute (KATI). She holds professional membership with the Canadian Art Therapy Association.
Sara’s practice is trauma informed/responsive, anti-oppressive and rooted in intersectional feminism. She is informed by neuro-queer perspectives, challenges traditional normative frameworks and embraces neurological diversity. Attachment theory, somatic/sensory based practices, neuroscience, ecopsychology, storytelling and Jungian theory inform how she moves through the world, both personally and professionally.
Sara admires the courage it takes to begin therapy and is ready to meet you exactly where you are in your journey. As someone who uses therapy as part of her support system, she values the importance of finding ways to support and affirm your identity. Perhaps it’s a place to express with or with words. A place to show up without judgement. A positive relationship that feels supportive and validating. A container to explore and process all different types of experiences. A place of acceptance for who you are. An experience that allows you to try out new ideas. A space that welcomes your special interests and passions. A place to land, to learn/unlearn, to share, to be hopeful, to rest and to feel.
As a professionally trained art therapist, Sara is passionate about inviting the creative process into the therapeutic relationship if and when it feels right for you. This can look different for each person and it is one of the aspects she loves most about art therapy. There are no rules about inviting the creative process within our time together. She meets with clients who create while talking, some who spend time creating more than talking, some who hardly talk at all and spend most of their time delving into the creative process, some who create many different things in a session and everywhere in between. No previous art experience is required and no special supplies are needed to incorporate art therapy into your sessions.
Sara trusts that her approaches will shift and evolve as she continues in her work and she will continue to add to her toolbox of practices. She is currently at the beginning phase of training in Somatic Experiencing and looks forward to weaving this training into her practice as it fits.
Sara is happy to explore a therapeutic relationship with people of all different ages and has experience with children, teens, young adults and older adults, both in individual and group therapy.
